The quick answer

Start with your game, players, region, recurring budget and maintenance needs. Verify the exact plan’s resources and export options, then trial it with a real save before committing for a long billing period.

Based on linked official documentation and editorial guidance. This is not a hands-on server test or a verified hosting recommendation.

Write your group’s brief in five lines

List the game and build, expected simultaneous players, where those players live, the recurring budget, and any required mods. Add the person responsible for the server. Those five lines rule out more bad purchases than a table of inflated scores.

Separate requirements from preferences. If console friends need a particular connection method, that is a requirement. A panel with a favorite color is a preference. When a host cannot meet a requirement, a larger discount does not make the plan suitable.

Use the self-hosting versus renting guide if you have not yet decided how much maintenance work the group is willing to do.

Ask about the exact plan

Ask thisWhy it matters
What will the next bill be?Separates a promotion from the recurring cost
Which region is available for this game?A provider’s global location list may not match this plan
What memory and CPU limits apply?A hardware model name is not an allocation
Can I download a complete world?Makes leaving possible
How does a restore work?Tests whether the backup feature is usable
What exactly qualifies for a refund?Defines how reversible the trial is

Keep the answers with a screenshot or dated note. If an important condition is unclear, ask before paying rather than assuming support will make an exception later.

Choose the region with your players in mind

Put the group on a rough map. If most people play in one area, begin with a nearby region; if the group is split, test a location that is a workable compromise. A city name on a plan page is a starting point, not a latency measurement.

Ask for a test endpoint or a short trial where available. Compare the experience during the hours your group normally plays. Keep the same connection method and record who tested, where they were, and what happened. A number from somebody else’s internet connection does not predict every player’s route.

Avoid claiming that one region is universally best. Your choice is about this group’s connections and schedule. If somebody consistently struggles while everyone else is fine, investigate their path before replacing the whole server.

Use the first billing period as a trial

Prepare a repeatable session: your expected save, ordinary player activity, and the mods you actually need. Check startup, joining, normal play, a clean restart, and a world export. Record failures alongside successful checks; a review that only records the quietest ten minutes will not help you later.

If a test fails, preserve a specific example for support. “Three players disconnected around this time, with this log entry” gives them more to work with than “the server is bad.” Keep account credentials and player data out of public reports.

Do the export and restore checks while you still have time to change providers. The easiest point to discover a restrictive panel is before your world becomes the group’s only copy.

Read recommendations as arguments, not trophies

A useful review explains its workload, measured results, costs, and limitations. Check when the test happened, who performed it, and whether the recommendation would change for a different game or player count. An unexplained decimal score cannot answer those questions.

SpawnHosts currently has no measured provider scores. Our testing methodology explains the evidence required before we publish one. The hosting comparison interface shows dated provider-published offers, not measured recommendations.

Once you have a shortlist, write one downside for each option and decide which downside you are willing to live with. That is a more useful final step than searching for a provider with no negative reviews anywhere.
