The quick answer
Start with access, player limits, and backups. Preserve the current configuration, change one setting at a time, restart cleanly where required, and confirm the result in game. Do not treat a shared settings block as a complete or version-proof configuration.
Based on linked official documentation and editorial guidance. This is not a hands-on server test or a verified hosting recommendation.
Keep a known-good configuration
Before the first edit, copy your current configuration somewhere outside the active server directory. Give the copy a meaningful date and a sentence explaining what currently works. You want to recover a known state, not collect a folder full of files named “final.”
Use the current configuration reference and the template supplied with your installed server version. A settings block from a forum may omit new fields or contain values meant for a very different group. Make a small, understandable change rather than replacing the whole file to get one feature.
For a managed host, find out whether the panel writes configuration files when the server starts. Decide which interface is authoritative before alternating between manual edits and panel controls. Otherwise a correct edit can appear to vanish for reasons unrelated to the setting itself.
Separate who can join from who can administer
Pocketpair’s reference defines ServerName and ServerDescription for identification, ServerPassword for joining, and ServerPlayerMaxNum for the player limit. These are different jobs: a recognizable name is not access control, and a player limit is not a hardware recommendation.
| Setting | Decision to make |
|---|---|
| ServerName | A name your group can recognize |
| ServerPassword | A private join password shared only with intended players |
| ServerPlayerMaxNum | A limit appropriate to the group and tested capacity |
| CrossplayPlatforms | Which documented platforms you intend to allow |
Share join details through a private channel. Keep management credentials separate from the information every player needs.
Enable backups, then check that they exist
The official bIsUseBackupSaveData option enables built-in world backups. Pocketpair notes that it increases disk activity and creates a backup directory with time-based retention. Check the actual output after enabling it rather than assuming that a successful restart proves the backup is usable.
A local backup and an off-machine backup solve different problems. Local copies can help with a recent mistake. An independently stored export can help when the running machine or hosting account is unavailable. Decide how much progress your group can afford to lose and use that to set a practical export schedule.
See the server backup guide for a restore rehearsal that keeps the current world intact.
Agree on the experience before changing rates
A faster progression rate may make the next session more convenient, but it also changes the pace of the shared world. Ask the group what problem you are solving: less repetitive gathering, shorter waits, or a different difficulty. Write down that goal before choosing a number.
Apply one change and play an ordinary session. If you change several rates and a resource limit together, you cannot tell which adjustment caused a surprising result. Keep the previous value in your operator note and agree on when the group will review it.
Do not describe a copied configuration as a performance fix without measuring it. For unexplained crashes, preserve logs and compare resource use first. The hardware baseline and the world’s configuration need to be evaluated separately.
A three-part check after every edit
- Startup: the server reaches its ready state without a new configuration error.
- Behavior: an intended player can join and observe the change you meant to make.
- Persistence: after a clean restart, the correct world and setting are still in use.
If one check fails, return to the saved configuration and reproduce the problem with the smallest possible change. That gives both you and a support team a useful description of what changed.
